Gomez Grind Course Overview
Starting at the Gomez Peak Pavilion, you'll run .75 miles up a connector trail to our beloved "Angel Loop." From there, you'll continue counter-clockwise around Gomez Peak, taking the connector trail back to the picnic area for a total of 3.1 miles and 495 feet of elevation gain. Then pause for a quick recharge and high fives, then do it all over again. And again. And again. And again...
Two Options. One Destination.
Timed Last Runner Standing
Choose a timed loop option to test your speed, and your endurance.
-
One 3.1 mile loop every hour, on the hour.
-
Runners must start each loop at the same time.
-
The sooner you get back, the longer break you get.
-
Miss the return cutoff, switch to cheering on your peers.
-
Last runner standing receives a percent of race entry fees, a locally-made award, and friends for life.
Untimed 24-hour
More of the slow-and-steady type? Grind out those loops at your own pace.
-
Complete as many 3.1 mile loops as you can within a 24-hour timeframe.
-
Take breaks. Take naps. Take your time.
-
Set personal goals for speed or miles.
-
Use it as a training run for your next ultra!
-
Runner with the most laps receives a locally-made award, and friends for life.
Aid Station and Support
There will be one aid station at the start/finish with water, Hammer Nutrition products, regular race grub, and volunteer home-cooked meals. Expect healthier, locally sourced options.
The course will be heavily marked at trail crossings. The Gomez Peak trail network is extensive. When in doubt, follow signs that say "Gomez PK Parking Lot ->". We highly suggest you downloading the GPX file to your phone or watch in case you miss a marked turn.
Weather and Gear
Weather in the Southwest can be unpredictable and change drastically throughout a day and night. Rain, wind, and even snow is possible, and the one guarantee is temperature swings. In March, the Gila can climb into the 80's during the day and drop below freezing at night.
We suggest packing all the layers in a drop-bag at the aid station: rain jacket, thermal layers, extra socks, and gloves. Poles are allowed. Basic first aid will be available.
Awards
Last Runner Standing will receive 10% of race entry fees and a locally-made award.
The top male and female runner with the most laps in the untimed 24 hour race will receive a locally-made award.
